Abstract

Abstract: The normal human erythrocyte must be highly deformable in vivo to pass through peripheral capillaries with luminal diameters of 3–4 µm and through the interendothelial slits associated with the basement membrane fenestrations of the spleen. A significant aspect of red cell deformability is the tendency of the red cell membrane to rotate around its cytoplasmic contents when the cell is subjected to shearing action by the surrounding plasma [14]. This so-called tank-treading motion reduces the hydraulic resistance to red cell passage through capillaries [11] and may also facilitate oxygen exchange between the red cell and the capillary endothelium.
